Augusta Christian Schools held Honoring our Hometown Heroes Night at its football game on Oct. 16. All Richmond and Columbia County fire and police agencies were invited to participate and 23 members from the Columbia County Sheriff's Department, Martinez-Columbia County Fire and Rescue, Augusta-Richmond County Fire Department and the Georgia State Patrol attended. They were recognized during halftime of the game in a ceremony on the field. They were led onto the field by two students holding a banner made by the Augusta Christian middle school art class. Each agency was presented with a framed certificate to commemorate Augusta Christian's Hometown Heroes Night. The crowd gave them a standing ovation.

The adoption fee for puppies and kittens is $20. All adopted animals must be spayed or neutered. Visitors must wear closed-in shoes to visit the kennel area, which is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays.
Week 10 of the Pigskin Picks contest saw a total of 87 entries with one qualifier getting all 10 correct; 15 qualifiers got nine correct; 36 qualifiers got eight correct; and 17 qualifiers got the minimum seven correct. There were 18 entries that did not get at least seven correct, including one late-mailed entry and two duplicated entries.
Nathan Lechner won the gold medal in the 500-meter cycling event and fourth place in the 1K event during the Fall State Special Olympic Games in Statesboro, Ga., which were held Oct. 2-4.
Martinez-Columbia Fire Rescue Capt. David Dickenson and Columbia County sheriff's deputies fill their plates with chili. The Evans Lions Club held a chili supper Thursday at fire headquarters in honor of emergency personnel and first responders in the county.
Hundreds of children participated in Trick-or-Treat so Others Can Eat at Patriots Park on Thursday. Admission was a can of food for Golden Harvest Food Bank.
The Columbia County Recreation Department was named the "2009 First District Agency of the Year" at the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association 2009 Awards Banquet on Oct. 26. Patriots Park was also named as the Best Park/Recreation Facility by readers of Augusta Magazine.
Lakeside's boys and girls cross country teams won the Region 3-AAAA meet Saturday at Blanchard Woods Park. Junior Anna Bowles won her third individual region title with a course record 19:17. Shane Wilson finished second in the boys race.
